For much of Trovesaurus's twelve-year history, advertising covered the site's running costs. Over the past year it has no longer been enough, and with optional adverts now off by default, community sponsors are what keep Trovesaurus running.

Chapter 00 — Introduction

A reconstructed lore codex for the game Trove.

About this reconstruction

The lore in this codex was rebuilt from the game's own surviving localization data — the *.binfab string tables that ship with the client (NPC dialogue, quest text, sign and tomb inscriptions, tutorial "Lore Cubes," item and title flavor, and event scripts). Nothing here is invented wholesale: every story beat is anchored in a line of in-game text, and the most evocative lines are quoted verbatim so the original voice is preserved.

Where the sources disagree — and after more than a decade of seasonal updates, they sometimes do — this codex says so plainly rather than smoothing the contradiction away. Trove's myth grew in layers, and the seams are part of the story. Connective passages that bridge two quoted facts are marked as reconstruction.

How the chapters are organized

The codex moves from the top of the cosmos downward and outward:

  1. The Myth (Ch. 1–3) — the creation-and-sundering legend, the nature of the voxel cosmos and
  2. the Builder, and the awakening of the player-hero.

  3. The Lands (Ch. 4–8) — a gazetteer of Trove's worlds and the deep histories of three fallen
  4. or fractured realms: the Cursed Vale, the Reng Empire, and Neon City, plus the dragons.

  5. The Geode Saga (Ch. 9–11) — the coming of the Sunseekers, the sanctuary in the deep, and
  6. the war for Geode's surface.

  7. The Deep and the High (Ch. 12–13) — the Depths and the Rising Tide, and the Sundered Uplands.
  8. The War of Light and Shadow (Ch. 14–16) — the Gathering Light, the Lunar Plunge, and
  9. Q'bthulhu's Shadow Tower.

  10. The Living World (Ch. 17–18) — the wheel of seasonal festivals, and a who's-who of Trove's
  11. recurring cast.

The shape of the cosmos, in one breath

*Her Radiance once protected all realms, above and below... The Moon grew jealous of the Sun...

A great shadow, long trapped, was now freed... At dawn the battle began. By nightfall it was

lost... and so [the Sun Goddess] sacrificed herself and her realm... Now you must step forth to

enter the Prime Realm, join the battle, and become a beacon of light.*

— the Lore Cubes of the tutorial

That is the whole of Trove in miniature: a Sun, a jealous Moon, a freed Shadow, a goddess who spent herself to buy the world time, and you — a Trovian, a small bright builder — sent into the ruins to carry the light forward.

The chapters that follow expand each thread.
